My life story

My life story

I was born normal on December 17, 1980. If you know what normal is, let me know! My name is Dave Worst. I have one older brother, Scott, beside myself. I have one brother, Jeffrey, who is in heaven. Then came Mike and Amy.

When I was five months old, my dad had a horse show. My mom and dad put me in the car to take a nap. I fell off the seat. There was a family friend at the show. He was a paramedic there helping. At the time they rushed me to the hospital and the doctor there said that I was not breathing!!! But they revived me. l was in the hospital for two weeks. Then I came home.

Two months from my accident I went to Ken-o-sha school. I went there for 4 years. There they had me doing some exercises, speech and stuff like that to help me out.

They had an indoor pool and I went in it to exercise.

Some classes came from other schools. One of those teachers was a family friend. He came inside to see me every time. Who knew that Mr. Vermerris was going to be one of my teachers? I looked forward to him coming every year!

When I was 5 years old, I got my first wheelchair. I went to a neighbor’s house. I wanted to show them my brand new chair. I thought I was so cool.

I went to Ken-o-sha for pre-school through second grade. Ken-o-sha was good for me at the time. Then I went to Creston Christian when I was in 3rd grade. Guess who was my teacher? Mr. Vermerris. When I went to Creston Christian I learned more about Christ.

When I was in seventh grade my Grandma Worst died from leukemia. That same year my Grandpa Worst died of a heart attack on a golf course in Florida.

I started to help passing out snacks to the kids when they went to Sunday school. I think it was my Mom who asked me if I had a good time. I said, “Yes. I think I would like to work with kids some day.”

I graduated from Creston in 8th grade in 1996. It was a difficult summer because I lost one of my best friends, Phep. He drowned. There is not a day that goes by where I don’t think about him.

My family goes camping every year. The campground had names for every week. The week that we were there was called Special Needs Week. They had volunteers for us to hang out with. The 1st year we had 5 campers and only 3 volunteers, so we had to share the volunteers,

Paul was one of the campers and people called me Paul, Paul was in a wheelchair like mine. They called him Dave. At the time we hated that but now I look back. We could have had a good time with that!!! Every year at the end of the week they had special Olympics. Paul and I always raced.

I made profession of faith at Sunshine Church in 1996.

I then went to Grand Rapids Christian High and graduated in the class of 2000.

I grew up watching Mike play basketball. Mike played all four years of high school and two years at Calvin. He coaches basketball at Grand Rapids Christian High where we all went to school. He also works at a tool and die shop.

Scott, my other brother, works at D.T.E. but I think he would rather play on the golf tour.

Scott and Cindy have 2 boys, 3 and 1.

My sister, Amy, is a hair stylist at Aesthetica in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She also coaches Girls softball at R.C.S. where my Dad and I work.

I tried working at several places, but none of them were near as good as where I am working now. I started working at Rockford Christian School in January, 2001. I love it every day! I am a teachers’ assistant. I love working with all of the kids. Every day is different and exciting.

My helper dog, Calla, comes with me every day. So does my Dad. He is the maintenance dude.

I’m still working at school and in my 6th year. And guess who I work with? Mr. VerMerris!

I live with my dad and sister, Amy. I move out on my own after school for a year. I an glad I tried it I moved back in with dad.

I love to do artwork, as well as talking with people, hanging out with friends and family, and playing with my dog. She is a "Paws with a Cause" dog. I got Calla in 2001, and she became my best friend.

In November, 2006, Mom went home to see Jesus. I miss her every day. I would love to talk to her.

Things that I would like to do: skydiver
I would love to see The Brooklyn tabernacle Choir and maybe jest maybe sing in there Choir!!!

Thank you Dot for helping me with this!!!

lion

We went to the pet expo and saw a bunch of animals mostly dogs and cats. there was also a few snakes and reptiles, they had a separated part where they had a tiger kangaroo and some monkeys which was really cool. Amy and I took a picture with a baby lion that was sitting on my lap! I got to hold it for a few minutes and pet it, it was so cool!
